The Galeão Air Base (BAGL), former designation for the current ALA 11, is a base of the Brazilian Air Force located in Ponta do Galeão, Ilha do Governador, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The air base operates in the same facilities as Galeão International Airport.
 
The Galeão Air Base was created on May 10, 1923 by the Federal Government that expropriated land on Ilha do Governador to establish the Center ofNaval Aviation, a unit of the Navy; the name became "Naval Aviation Base of Rio de Janeiro" where the "School of Naval Aviation" (EAvN) was headquartered until its deactivation on March 25, 1941. 
 
From the creation of Brazilian Air Force on May 22, 1941, the "Naval Aviation Base" was extinguished and the "Galeão Air Base" - BAGL was created, which played an important role during theWorld War II; nowadays the Galeon Air Base is subordinate to the III COMAR.
