“THIS Souvenir Folder of your Farewell Service has been prepared by Padre Guinness, who spent the last two-and-a-half years in Prison Camps in Europe. Some of the officers and men in these Camps found great inspiration in the Messages from National Leaders. I have seen a beautiful hand-written illuminated Manuscript con- taining many of these messages, to which Lieutenant Arnold Vivian, Grenadier Guards, who was killed two weeks later in an attempt to escape, wrote this glowing preface: "To all who fight for future worlds this book stands a pillar of light to guide us on our way. It comes from the heat of battle-a Christian Order of the Day-with its urgent call from world leaders, and its hymns linked in a chain of thought, which echo down the centuries the certainty of Christ's ultimate triumph. This is more than a Service Book; it is a declaration, addressed to twentieth- century men and women, voicing in simple language the convictions of all our hearts. Its message sweeps us forward, beyond the hell of battle to that goal of future citizenship where, infused with fresh endeavour, we have taken our place in the tasks which lie ahead." I hope you will take back to your home something of that fresh and conquering spirit. Remember this Farewell Service. The Sovereignty of Almighty God has been the final fact in war. We asked faithfully and obtained effectu- ally. We were upheld by Unseen Forces when we had no might of our own. We were given by the Christ of the Soldier's Road the power to stand the strain. Carry to the coming years the secret of that finest hour in which we turned to God and found our duty reaffirmed and our strength renewed”
