This is a German prisoner of war carved ox bone spill vase dating to WW1. German and Italian prisoners interned in POW camps in Britain were permitted to make artistic pieces which they could then trade with guards or visitors for money or food. They used any materials that were available to them in the camps. These pieces. made from discarded animal bones, are distinctly Germanic and examples were produced at many of the POW camps around Britain at the time.
