The foreword to this pocket book states;

“THIS 'Catechism of First Aid for Gas Casual- ties', prepared by Acting Corps Officer S. Burnley, provides a most valuable means by which all members of the Brigade, persons engaged on A.R.P. duties, or even those who look to their self protection, may keep up their knowledge of how to ensure protection against gas attack. You may think that you have read anti-gas manuals carefully, but it is not until you have been given questions that it is possible to judge whether you have really learnt what you have read. This little book with questions and answers is an excellent method of ensuring that you really know how to deal with the grave danger of poison gases. The book has been carefully checked by Dr. W. C. Bentall, the Civil Defence Staff Officer for the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who agrees with me as to the accuracy and usefulness of this book, which I commend to all members of the Brigade. (Sir) JOHN DUNCAN, Major-General, Chief Commissioner, St. John Ambulance Brigade. March 4, 1940”.
