The foreword states;

“LIKE the first volume of the Daily Telegraph Story of the War, which has had a very encouraging reception, this second volume is an illustrated record, day by day, of the world-wide conflict and an atlas of the battle areas. Its chief interest lies, however, in its eye-witness accounts of great events and its deeply moving stories of heroism and self-sacrifice. The reader goes with the convoys to Murmansk, looks down upon the moonlit streets of Berlin as the bombs begin to fall, goes ashore with the Commandos in the dawn at Dieppe, watches the Ark Royal heel over and sink, hunts for U-boats in the Atlantic, meets the Russians in Teheran and shares the fierce heat and danger of the Libyan battlefields. Here are recorded those heroisms for which the histories will have no place. A fifteen-year-old messenger wins the British Empire Medal and a stewardess the George Medal. Railwaymen move blazing ammunition waggons out of sid- ings. A constable captures a parachute spy. The 'Front Line Farm' carries on in defiance of bombs, shells and machine-gun bullets. A dying boatswain's ingenuity saves his boat-load of survivors. The Commandos open the door when the German commander says "Come in. D. M.”
