FOREWORD “The object of this manual is to present briefly a résume of the effects of chemical warfare substances and the methods that should be adopted to minimize them. The manual is intended primarily for the use of medical officers of the three defence services. It cannot be too strongly emphasized that a speedy recognition of the type of gas which has caused casualties is essential for rapid diagnosis and efficient treatment; these desiderata can only be obtained by timely and thorough knowledge of chemical warfare substances, their characteristics and their effects on the human body.”
