Foreword 

A LITTLE while ago a soldier showed me book he had made . He had done the drawings and even drawn the letters . His name is Gunner Tim Madden and this is his book , which I recom mended to the publishers . I was impressed by his natural modesty and his quaint sense of humour , and I was grateful to him for having made me smile . The book is reproduced exactly as he drew it - lettering and all ; and I have not recommended any alterations in either spelling or phraseology . In a short story I once wrote I made a character say " There ought to be more clowns . They could save the world . There ought to be a Clowns ' Battalion . The whole world would laugh itself out of war sickness . . . . " " Substitute " humorists " for " clowns " and the argument remains . We need more humorists and fewer dictators , for humorists do not destroy humanity . They make it laugh instead . Tim Madden is a born humorist . His humour is spontaneous . I introduce him to service man and civilian . They will , I am sure , recognise him as an authority on Military Subjects ! CLARENCE WINCHESTER .
