The preface states;

“SOME time since the author, who happened for professional purposes to require a short history of the British Army, discovered to his surprise that no such thing was now to be purchased except through second-hand booksellers, and that such works as were thus procurable were by no means up-to- date. Since there seemed no prospect of any other historian undertaking the task, the present writer was with some misgiving-presumptuous enough to take it upon himself, and to endeavour to write a history which should be both of interest to the general reader and of use to his brother-officers.

The scope and style of the work stand in little need of explanation, though no doubt in much of apology. The maps, it is believed, include every place mentioned in the text, and few other superfluous names. The "Notes for Further Reading" are simply what their title indicates, and in no sense a bibliography of the subject, for which in a book of this kind there seems no necessity. Bibliographies are in general of little use to the average reader, who is usually quite content with the assurance that the writer has drawn on all available material for his purpose and can quote good authority for his statements of fact. Moreover the scope of the present work has rendered it unnecessary to pursue any extensive researchės into archives or unpublished documents.

The writer's thanks and acknowledgements for help willingly and courteously given are due to F. J. Hudleston, Esq., C.B.E., and W. Y. Baldry, Esq., and their assistants at the War Office Library; to Major H. G. Parkyn and his staff at the Royal United Service Institution Library; to the Library staff of the United Service Institution of India; to the officials of the military libraries at Tidworth, Aldershot, and Delhi and Bareilly, India; and last, but by no means least, to the person to whom this book is dedicated. E. W. SHEPPARD. ALTHORP, NEWMARKET, SUFFOLK, 14/1/25.”

This makes a very interesting read into pre ww1 British army history.
