For sale is a Victorian Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal Cpl W Mills 42nd Royal Highlanders.
This Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is engraved on the rim “Corpl W Mills 42nd Regt”.
William Mills enlisted into the British army in 1846, and served with the 2nd battalion 73rd Royal Highlanders where he was awarded a South Africa medal (1834 - 1853) and a South Africa Medal (Kaffir Medal), unfortunately these two medals are missing. After 1853 he then served with the 42nd Royal Highlanders regiment under the rank of Corporal, this is where he was then awarded Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. This medal is in good condition and is issued to a good regiment.
The Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was instituted by King William IV in 1830. The medal remained in use for 100 years, until it was replaced by the Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct (Military) in 1930. During that time the reverse of the medal remained virtually unchanged, while the design of the obverse was altered during the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V. And it was awarded for Until 1870: 21 years infantry or 24 years cavalry service.
Accompanying this medal is 3 scans of his service records. Upon payment please let me know if you would prefer digital scans or printed copies. There is still plenty of research to be done on this medal!
