For sale is a Rare Antique Georgian Period Italian Carved & Etched Bone Panel Of Meo Patacca (Bartolomeo).
This image depicts a scene from "Meo Patacca," a 17th-century Roman epic poem by Giuseppe Berner. Under the original etching it states "Junia, e Naccia fanno un pranzo con gnocchi, e pinne, por la pace fatta con Meo Patacca Can VILO," indicates that this specific scene shows Junia and Naccia preparing a meal of gnocchi and "pinne" (likely referring to a type of fish or a culinary element) to celebrate a peace accord with Meo Patacca.
Meo Patacca is a well-known character in Roman folklore, often portrayed as a brave but somewhat boisterous Roman soldier or mercenary. The poem "Meo Patacca" is a significant work in Roman dialect literature, known for its humorous and adventurous narrative, particularly focusing on the siege of Vienna by the Turks. The carving captures a domestic setting, with two women in a kitchen, one grating something and the other tending to a fire, while cats and a chicken are present, illustrating a moment of everyday life within the context of the larger narrative.
This measures 8.5cm in length x 8.7cm height and is in mostly good condition, small chip to top right hand side. This dates to the early 1800s. This is superbly detailed.
