DKV has the legal form of a registered association (eingetragener Verein/ e.V.). The association has 19 subdivisions with about 1300 clubs and 116,000 members in 2009. So she is the world greatest canoeing association. 

The foundation of DKV was iniated by Canoe-Club Alsterbrüder (today: Alster Canoe Club, Germany's oldest club established in 1905) on 15 March 1914 in Hamburg. The association was dissolved under NS-rule in 1934 and reestablished in 1949 in the British and American Occupation Zones. In 1938 there had been more than 110 clubs with more than 44,000 members.
