SOLD

For sale is a WW1 1918 British General Service Artillery Sighting Telescope Manufactured by by W. Watson & Sons Ltd of London in Semi Relic condition found in Swanage.

This telescope was metal detected in Swanage around 20 years ago, and restored/ polished up by the man that found it. The three lenses are very damaged and the telescope doesn’t draw open.

Marked as G.S. Telescope (General Service), often stamped with pattern numbers like Patt. G.340 or as an artillery/gun sighting telescope (such as the Sighting Telescope No. 4 series). Used extensively by British artillery units and coastal defense heavy naval guns during World War I for precise target ranging.

Swanage served as a military training and coastal defense hub during the First World War, leaving a lasting legacy commemorated in the town today. The waters off Swanage and nearby St Alban's Head saw wartime naval operations. For instance, the armed minesweeping steam trawler HMT Arfon operated out of Portland to clear German U-boat mines before striking a mine and sinking near St Alban's Head in April 1917, claiming 10 lives.
