HISTORY AND TRADITIONS. The present 21st (Empress of India's) Lancers was formed from volunteers from the Bengal European Cavalry, when the forces of the Honourable East India Company were finally transferred to the Crown in 1862. From the formation of the regiment until 1897 it was known as the 21st Hussars, the title being then changed to 21st Lancers. Three regiments had previously borne the num- erical title. The last of these had seen good service. It went through much deadly campaigning in San Domingo in 1795-8, when engaged against the negro revolutionists under Toussaint L'Ouverture. A portion of the regiment saw hard service before Monte Video in 1807, and also on the Kaffir Frontier in 1812, and again in 1814-5. A detachment of the regiment was in garrison at St. Helena when the Emperor Napoleon was there. It was disbanded in 1819. The present regiment formed part of the British force under Sir Herbert Kitchener in his successful Nile campaign of 1897-8, during which it rendered signal service on many occasions. It more practically distinguished itself by its brilliant charge in the crowning victory at Omdurman. For its gallantry on this occasion the present title of the regiment was conferred upon it. Three Victoria Crosses were gained on this occasion.
