For sale is a 1929 Dated Jewish Mourners Funeral Memory Book, Freiberg, Germany. The front cover of the book states in german “Trost für das Trauerjahr und das Fest der Seelen” and in English this states “Consolation for the year of mourning and the celebration of souls.” This Jewish mourning book, is issued for the funeral of “Frau Wwe. Johanna Friesem” born 4th November 1851, and died after a short illness in 7th March 1929, in Freiberg, Germany. Throughout this book the language is german and Hebrew. 

 

This mourning book published in 1923 in Frankfurt, Germany. This book is important social history for Freiburg Germany, and an important insight into the Jewish community that lived here before World War Two. In the late 1920s there was a Jewish population in Freiburg and by the end of 1945 with at least 314 of these people lost there lives during the-Holocaust. Some history of Freiburg throughout the war can be seen on the final photo. 

 

At the start of this book there are two clippings from a newspaper talking of the recently deceased:


 

“Obituary. On March 7th, our esteemed senior boss passed away after a short illness. Mrs. Wwe.M.Friesem. Respected by all of us as a model of the most faithful fulfillment of duty and a model of tireless creativity, we sincerely regret her passing. Her constant willingness to help and personal kindness ensure her a faithful memory. The employees of the company M. Friesem. Sinzig, March 8, 1929.”

 

“After a short sickbed, our dearest mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and sister passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 78. Mrs. Wwe. Johanna Friesem. fall asleep gently. born Freiberg. Sinzig, Worms, Brandenburg, Koblenz, Alzey, Bonn, March 8, 1929. On behalf of the mourners Leo Friesem. The funeral will take place on Sunday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m. in Sinzig, from Ausdorferstrasse. If someone has accidentally not received an ad, we ask that you treat it as such.”

 

This book contains 26 pages of prayers, hymns, scripture Etc, and personal texts and memories of the recently deceased.
