King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, which was opposed by his government and the Church of England. He signed the Instrument of Abdication on December 10, 1936, and made a radio broadcast to the nation the following day to explain his decision. His younger brother, Prince Albert, then became King George VI, and Edward was granted the title of Duke of Windsor.
