The foreword states:

“This book tells the story of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps during the period between the two wars and in the Second World War, when the Corps was called upon to make the greatest effort in its history. It describes how the Corps expanded from a very small nucleus and achieved in the shortest possible time the creation of an efficient and virile organization to deal with the enormously complex and vital task of supplying the great war-time Army with its stores, vehicles and ammuni- tion. It was an extremely difficult story to write because of its wide range and many ramifications and the necessity of giving a balanced picture in as few words as possible. We were fortunate, therefore, that Brigadier Alan Fernyhough, CBE, MC, should have undertaken the task of writing this momentous history. The son of a senior officer in the Corps, he him- self had a most distinguished career and his wide experience, knowledge and ability made him an admirable choice as author. He has been greatly helped by another Corps officer, Major H. E. D. Harris, who carried out tremendous amount of valuable research work for this history. a This is a story full of important lessons, and in this respect perhaps the failures are of more account than the successes. Both should be taken to heart. As the head of the Corps from 1942 to 1946, I am honoured to have been asked to write this short Foreword. I am confident that the book will commend itself to a wide body of readers, and I know it will be read with pride and interest by all those who are or have been connected with the Corps.”
