Pilot's wings were introduced in 1913. Observers shared many of the same duties, responsibilities and hazards as pilots and yet bore no distinguishing badge. Army Order 327, in 1915, announced the introduction of a badge for all qualified officers. It was the only such badge until early in the Second World War. It fell out of use between the wars but was reinstated in 1937. . Originally produced in gold and silver, a worsted version was introduced later, and after 1920 the bullion version fell out of use.
