For sale is an exceptionally Rare WW2 German Army Sanitäter Medical Recognition Identification Vest/ Back Pack Cover/ Helmet Cover. The final Four photographs show examples of this Sanitäter Medical Recognition in use. We believe this piece to have been theatre made, due to unusual construction methods, most unusual is that it’s double sided which most of the examples seen are single sided. This is a Super rare German army medical or Sanitäter red cross recognition vest. These vest where issued and worn by Sanitäter and Krankenträger to be easily recognized in battle.
This piece measures:
Corner to corner of vest 290mm x 290mm (29cm)
Lace width 18mm (1.8cm)
Lace length 295mm (29.5cm)
Cross width 40mm (4cm)
Cross length 190mm (19cm)
Border width Varies from 7mm to 10mm (0.7cm to 1cm)
We believe this may potentially be a field made red cross recognition Vest/ back pack cover or helmet cover due to the crude red stitching attaching the cords to the main Red Cross panel. From original Photographs of these WW2 German Army Sanitäter Medic Recognition Pieces and the few surviving Examples of these WW2 German Army Sanitäter Medic Recognition Pieces we can see that production methods have their similarities, for example to note is how the folded front of the vest has a neatly stitched folded front to back border , and how the Red Cross is manufactured in two parts with each of the cross sections overlapping. Note also the materials used, are similar/ the same materials used as wartime armbands. Unfortunately there is cloth moth damage to the Red Cross itself. However this should not detract from the value or the rarity to this piece.
Other than the moth damage to the cross and light staining this is in good condition. And would make a brilliant display piece.
