WW1 era Bakelite Vesta Case AdvertisementFor Phosferine Brand Tablets

SOLD

Code: 11555

For sale is a WW1 1911 Bakelite Box For Phosferine Brand Tablets & Striker. An antique bakelite vesta case advertising Phosferine Brand Tablets dating from around 1910.

The bakelite has a very attractive marble design in a deep red colour. The front features a circle surrounding the words ‘Phosferine Brand Tablets’. There is a striker at the bottom and the lid is hinged with a tiny pin.

It is in good condition with minor wear and two tiny chips to the hinge which I hope I have captured in the photos. The lid fits snugly. The vesta case measures approx. 5 x 4 x 1.5cm.

Phosferine was a drug popular about 100 years ago, it was advertised during WWI as a nerve drug. It claimed to help soldiers fighting in the war with problems such as: mental exhaustion, loss of appetite, malaria, nerve shock and exhaustion, among other things.

The ingredients contained in the tablets were: quinine sulphate, diluted sulphuric acid, diluted phosphoric acid, alcohol and water.

A wonderful little piece of medical advertising memorabilia.
