For sale is a Antique 1909 The Old Walls Southampton Historical Description Underneath the Photo of the old walls which is a Posted Postcard. The historical context on the bottom of the postcard states:
“Old Walls, Southampton This arcade of Arches of the 14th Century was probably erected after the town had been partly burnt by the French in 1838, who appear to have attacked and plundered the Kings-house that stood here. A Barbican tower for better defence was built from this part of the wall into what is now the roadway. The tide whashed the bases of the pillars supporting this arcade which was probably built in this way to make use of the materials at hand, the object being to form a parapet for defence on the top”
